Klevgr’s new Noise Reduction Plugin – Brusfri

For a while now, Izotope has held the mantle of one of (if not the) best noise reduction plugins on the market. But it also has a price point to match. Well, Sweedish company Klevgr has come up with what may be a product that could steer some voice artists and podcaster away from Izotope’s suite of products and onto a $60 plugin that does the job just as well (if not perhaps even a little better). In this episode we plug it in, add some audio and debate the outcomes.

this is the pro audio suite podcast
00:03
quick bytes welcome to another pro audio
00:06
suite quick bytes this week we’re
00:08
talking about noise reduction next week
00:10
we’ll do a full shoot out but we’re just
00:12
going to talk about one of the noise
00:14
reduction options and it comes out of
00:15
Sweden it’s called Bruce free and George
00:18
you’ve been playing around with Bruce
00:20
free I have Bruce free is a noise
00:23
reducer that is trying to you know take
00:26
some wind from the sails of others like
00:29
isotope Rx and waves
00:31
NS one and things like that and I’ve
00:34
been only playing around for the short
00:36
for a short time but am I at least my
00:38
initial tests and real-world tests of
00:41
you know recording actual voiceover
00:43
tracks and listening to them back I’ve
00:45
been pretty darn impressed with what it
00:47
can do well you just play this a bit of
00:49
room noise before but we should play it
00:51
for our listeners and just so they can
00:53
hear what happens with rumbling of air
00:55
conditioners and various other artifacts
00:58
of yeah noise so here’s a here’s the
01:01
tail end of a sample of a voice and then
01:04
the room tone that ensues afterward here
01:07
we go we’re here to keep you healthy
01:09
happy and loving life for a lifetime
01:19
so that’s a pretty nice sample of Rumble
01:21
right yeah totally
01:23
this is you know a file that with the
01:25
right processing thrown on to it could
01:27
be usable
01:28
you know producer could take a voice
01:29
track like this apply the right high
01:32
pass filter and other things and get
01:34
something usable out of it but you know
01:36
and I know how to use these tools to get
01:39
a good result but usually I’m gonna run
01:41
it through at least two or three
01:42
different tools to get their end result
01:45
what’s pretty cool about Bruce free is
01:47
they bake in several different
01:49
processing tools into one you know so it
01:53
has a high-pass filter for example which
01:55
is obviously really helpful I mean if
01:57
you’re trying to get rid of Rumble
01:58
having a high-pass filter helps it also
02:02
lets you adjust the the amount or degree
02:05
of noise reduction you’re using which is
02:07
pretty standard fare it also has a
02:11
high-end boost as well which is kind of
02:14
interesting I guess the intention is
02:17
that if you use a lot of this processing
02:20
some of the top-end can get attenuated
02:21
just a little bit so he gives you a
02:24
little dial and lets you add back in a
02:27
top a little bit of the top-end
02:28
and then lastly it’s got an attack a
02:31
threshold and a release which is again
02:33
pretty standard fare but the graphic
02:35
design and how the controls are adjusted
02:37
is very minimalistic yet at the same
02:39
time easy to adjust so what you do is
02:43
you just have it listened to the noise
02:45
in the file you literally play back some
02:48
of the noise you click on the giant ear
02:50
button it learns the noise profile and
02:53
that’s going to be familiar to people
02:55
that use the noise reduction like in
02:56
audacity and then once it’s created that
03:00
noise profile it’s ready to go so here’s
03:02
what it sounds like
03:04
applied to that same audio sample I’m
03:09
gonna play it from right here
03:10
here’s Rumble and then some voice life
03:13
gives you a whole lot to live for
03:15
ends with quantum healthcare okay so
03:18
there’s Rumble with voice mhm and then
03:20
here it is now with the Bruce free
03:23
processing headed on life gives you a
03:27
whole lot to live for
03:29
ends with quantum healthcare pretty
03:32
dramatic difference
03:33
yeah yeah I mean massive so before the
03:36
room tone if I measured the room tone in
03:39
that room to that noise it was peaking
03:42
around minus 37 after bruce free added
03:46
on that same room tone measures at minus
03:49
75 Wow
03:52
and that’s and that’s one thing I like
03:53
about this tool is they made it musical
03:56
and by musical I mean they didn’t make
03:58
it like a hardcore gate it doesn’t take
04:02
away all the room tone it leaves like
04:04
enough room tone in there it’s free to
04:06
go okay there’s something there but
04:09
leaves a little bit behind so that you
04:11
know but it takes out just enough and
04:13
you can just you can determine to remove
04:15
more or less by adjusting what they call
04:18
the edge setting more edge removes more
04:21
room tone so pretty impressive right I
04:25
mean and it’s a $60 plugin for your fur
04:28
and you in the u.s. that’s the u.s.
04:29
pricing well I mean I I kind of see this
04:33
is gonna be worth the test but whenever
04:36
you’re away in our hotel building a
04:38
pillow fort or using a porter booth or
04:41
you know chaotic herbal hoo-ha right you
04:46
know which obviously has its issues as
04:48
well because you end up with that that
04:50
boxiness
04:51
but right this if this does what it
04:53
appears to do and looking at some of the
04:55
videos on the website it also seems to
04:58
get rid of reflections as well which
05:01
means what sends them down a bit yeah
05:03
where you could you could set yourself
05:04
up in a hotel room with minimal sort of
05:07
treatment around you which keeps you the
05:09
openness of the microphone without all
05:13
the artifacts of the room well that’s
05:18
the that’s the dream but does it take
05:19
out the artifacts of the room it’s not
05:21
addy reverberation is it not technically
05:23
no what it’s doing technically is
05:27
applying a whole bunch of downward
05:29
expanders what they call several
05:31
frequency trimmed expanders built on an
05:35
intelligent noise suppressor so some of
05:39
that the room reverb tail will get lost
05:41
in those expanders so here’s here’s the
05:45
sample of a set of a hand
05:47
clap this is from their own demo video
05:48
at the very end of the video they record
05:51
a hand clap with the iPhone they have an
05:54
iPhone version of this by the way for
05:55
$15 us and then they apply that tool and
06:00
you’ll see yes that you can still hear
06:02
that there’s a room but it definitely
06:04
takes away a good part of the reverb
06:06
tail listen to this oh sorry wrong fader
06:09
let’s bring up the right one learning
06:12
curve using my road caster here here we
06:16
go so you know yes there is still a
06:30
reverb tail it’s not taking away all the
06:33
reason so it seems to be getting the
06:35
tail but it’s not really getting those
06:37
early with fret reflections is it so if
06:40
you were in a hotel room say Ray you
06:42
still have to do some padding to keep
06:45
those early reflections down otherwise
06:47
you can end up with something that’s
06:48
probably not quite gonna cut it yeah
06:51
yeah no I mean it’s it’s not the miracle
06:55
device that allows us to ignore
06:56
acoustics oh I need to play the trumpet
07:04
give a man a new toy and look what
07:06
happens
07:07
we’re not quick we’re not quite there
07:09
yet but you know for what it is it’s a
07:12
pretty impressive tool the fact that it
07:14
has an iPhone version could just let you
07:16
get away with a little bit better
07:17
sounding auditions when you’re on the
07:19
road with your iPhone that’s pretty fun
07:22
so there are times when it’s really
07:23
helpful to use some processing before
07:25
your noise reduction like I know Robert
07:27
for example he uses it down would expand
07:29
in some cases before he uses his noise
07:32
reduction so yes rid of all those sort
07:34
of overall artifacts and then uses the
07:38
the noise reduction to get into that
07:40
more specific sort of frequency stuff so
07:44
you could sort of still work around a
07:45
bit that way to continue yeah so this
07:47
one tool is trying to make all that
07:50
user-friendly baked it into one tool and
07:54
do as many of those different steps that
07:56
you would normally have done manually
07:58
automatically and then also a 15
08:00
now plug in for your iPhone that’s
08:04
pretty amazing I mean I I do not down
08:07
want to downplay what you know iZotope
08:09
Rx and waves have developed I mean they
08:11
have incredible tools but you have to
08:13
buy a whole suite of plugins to get that
08:15
one thing and these guys are selling all
08:18
their stuff Alucard well I think that’s
08:20
the thing probably you know and we’ll
08:22
talk about this more in the shoot out
08:23
next time but I mean with the RX suite
08:25
you’re also getting D pop D click you
08:29
know all the other stuff that comes in
08:31
terms of noise reduction not just
08:33
ambient noise but yeah I mean that’s
08:37
pretty impressive as if you if you’re a
08:39
voice-over artist and you weren’t
08:40
worried about the rest you just wanted
08:41
to sort of clean up what you were
08:43
sending someone that’s a pretty
08:45
unbeatable price point isn’t it but I
08:46
reckon it’s fantastic I mean you would
08:48
put that on your laptop when you’re away
08:50
and we save a lot of grief I mean you
08:54
still set yourself up with a few pillows
08:56
or blankets or whatever but you’re not
08:58
sticking yourself inside a boxy box to
09:02
you know to record to try and keep the
09:05
sound out yeah I mean that’s true I mean
09:06
one of the biggest problems we have
09:08
working from the road is we’re trying to
09:10
keep out the noise so if we go inside a
09:11
closet and now we’re in a box and now I
09:14
created a new acoustical problem yeah
09:16
getting low noise and good acoustics
09:20
often are at odds with each other so now
09:23
we can just focus on getting rid of the
09:25
early reflections setting up a few
09:27
pillows in the room just killing off
09:29
those bounces off the walls and the
09:31
desks and then we can now we can dial
09:35
back that room tone to a pretty
09:36
acceptable level but in such a way that
09:39
there’s very minimal artifacting I mean
09:42
it’s very hard to tell that something
09:46
has been done to the file unless you’ve
09:48
heard the original version the real test
09:51
if noise reduction comes once you’ve
09:52
processed the voiceover ready to export
09:56
I mean once you start compressing and e
09:58
cueing see how much of it actually reads
10:01
up its ugly head that would be a good
10:03
test for that to actually send it to
10:05
Robert or Robbo and pretend it’s a
10:09
session so you know you would record and
10:11
then see what you can do with it there
10:13
the other
10:13
when it comes to compressing it and
10:15
whatever else you’re gonna do to that
10:17
file does it have that button where you
10:19
can listen to what you’re actually
10:21
taking out I love that button you know
10:23
what that’s a darn good question and it
10:25
appears that it does not have a way to
10:28
monitor the removed sound right which
10:32
can be very handy when you’re setting
10:34
your settings in rx to be able to
10:36
monitor the processed file and hear what
10:39
it’s removing I especially use that with
10:41
addy clicker wanting to hear what is
10:44
actually being removed yeah it’s helpful
10:46
so no it doesn’t have that feature good
10:48
man convention my kids love that wives
10:52
plug-in sibilance when I put that on I
10:54
love to come in and have a listen to
10:56
just the SS as they go through for some
10:58
reason I think that’s hilarious well
11:02
these guys they you should just even if
11:05
you don’t want their plugins just go to
11:06
clever and se it’s k le v gr a and d dot
11:12
SE and look at the product videos they
11:15
have one for their de-esser and it is
11:17
hilarious right it is so their
11:21
promotional videos are really
11:23
entertaining um you know at least watch
11:25
them because the one for the DSR is
11:27
fantastic for us Spanish Spanish
11:30
listeners well I know what I’m doing
11:35
when we’re done here then we’re done
11:37
we’re done well there we have it we’re
11:39
done so we’ll do the shoot up coming up
11:42
next week or to get your six shooters
11:44
out cuz we’re having a shoot out next
11:46
week then yeah okay sheriff let’s get
11:50
out of here
11:51
that was the pro audio suite if you have
11:55
any questions or ideas for a show let us
11:57
